Where are we?

We are at De Gasperi House Museum

Set up in the house where Alcide De Gasperi (President of the Reconstruction Council) was born, the permanent exhibition illustrates the activities of the Secretary of the Christian Democrats as well as the history of Trentino.

The Museum opened in 2006 and is located in the house where Alcide De Gasperi was born, in Pieve Tesino. The stateman’s life and experiences are described through sounds, images, objects and documents. It has been managed by the Fondazione Trentina Alcide De Gasperi since 2007, which oversees maintenance and guided tours.  The tour retraces the various stages of De Gasperi’s life and his relationship with Italy and Trentino-Alto Adige in the context of European and world politics. This place of memory was the first Italian site to be awarded the European Heritage Label in 2015.

Alcide De Gasperi was witness to an entire era. He was a member of the Austrian Chamber of Deputies in the County of Tyrol, before becoming Secretary of the Italian Popular Party in 1923 and a key figure in the Aventine Secession of 1924, in contrast to the growing fascism. Following the ‘Fascist laws’ of 1926 and the dissolution of political parties, De Gasperi attempted to leave the country illegally. Stopped by the police and imprisoned, he was pardoned but remained under special surveillance. He resumed underground political activity in 1942 and became one of the founders of the Christian Democrat Party. He was elected Prime Minister eight times successively, serving continuously from 10th December 1945 until 16th August 1953.
