Where are we?
We are at the Historical Museum of the Landing
The museum was established in 2002 and is dedicated to the bombing of Sicilian cities and the war-related events that followed the Allied landing in Sicily on 9 July 1943.
The Allied landing in Sicily on 9th July 1943 marked the beginning of the Italian campaign, initiating a front that was to prove far more challenging than expected. While the Italians could not successfully oppose the arrival of the Anglo-Americans, the Germans inflicted heavy blows on the enemy and withdrew efficiently without suffering any significant losses. The Sicilian population became acutely aware of the severe situation the country was in and how Sicily had become one of the nerve centres of the conflict.
The museum was set up in 2002 to commemorate the bombing of Sicilian cities and the events of the war that followed the Allied landings. It is designed to be very informative, with schools, young people, and the general public in mind. The tour includes photographs, posters, and newspapers, with background music evoking the mood of the 1940s. The reconstruction of an air-raid shelter, with sounds of sirens and explosions, allows visitors to theoretically relive the experience of the bombing.
