Where are we?

We are at the American Cemetery in Nettuno

The Nettuno Cemetery was built in 1956 in the area where the fallen of the Anzio landing were temporarily buried. It hosts 7,861 white crosses and features a large memorial.

The Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial in Nettuno began its life as a temporary war cemetery in the days following the Allied landings at Anzio and Nettuno. It became permanent in 1956, managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission. 7,862 soldiers who died during various operations, including Operation Shingle and the Sicilian and Salerno landings, are buried there. 490 graves contain the remains of those who could not be identified, as well as 12 Red Cross nurses and military aids who were killed during the conflict.

Inside the camp, which covers an area of 31,542 square metres, is a large memorial, consisting of a chapel whose walls bear the names of the 3,095 missing, a peristyle, and a map room in which war operations are described and illustrated. In the centre stands the ‘Brothers in Arms’ monument which depicts a US soldier and sailor in an embrace of fraternal and mutual support.

Many have visited the Cemetery over the years, including President George Bush for Memorial Day 1989 and President Bill Clinton in 1994 for the 50th anniversary celebrations of the landing at Neptune.
