Where are we?
We are at the bunker at Recoaro Terme
It was chosen by the C army of the German command because of its strategic position between Germany and the Gothic Line. Here the German officers surrendered on 22 April 1945.
During the Second World War, the small town of Recoaro Terme, strategically located between the front of the Gothic Line and the heart of the Reich, was chosen to be the residence and command base of German Army Group C (Heeresgruppe C). A complex system of air-raid shelters was set up with the support of the Organisation Todt from the spring of 1944. The underground bunker was intended to protect the German command in the event of air raids, ensuring the headquarters could continue to function. Many buildings were destroyed when the Allies bombed Recoaro on 20th April 1945, but the bunker remained intact. It was inside this bunker that on 22nd April 1945, the Wehrmacht and SS command agreed to offer the Allies partial surrender of the Group C armies.
After the war, the bunker was used as a warehouse, and since 2004 the Recoaro Bunker Association has transformed it into an exhibition space that welcomes visitors.
