Where are we?
We are at the Resistance archives in Barletta
They were established in 2001 to commemorate the massacre carried out by the Wehrmacht in September 1943.
Shortly after the armistice of September 1943, the Wehrmacht received orders to disarm the Italian troops in Barletta. Fierce fighting ensued during which the Germans also suffered losses. The next day, the German troops were bolstered and supported by air raids and the Italian soldiers were defeated.
On 12th September 1943, twelve people were indiscriminately captured, lined up in front of the post office and shot on the spot in retaliation.
Several monuments commemorate these events and the civilian victims, for example at the former Palazzo delle Poste, in front of the town hall and in the square in front of the railway station. Barletta is also home to the region’s Archive of the Resistance, founded in 2001, which preserves historical documents, a large research library, and photographs. The Archive carries out research into the history of southern Italy during the Second World War and is committed to sharing the history of the period with younger generations and remembering the massacre of civilians.
