Where are we?
We are at the Military Memorial of the Fallen Overseas
Inaugurated in 1967, it houses the remains of over 70,000 Italian soldiers who died in overseas territories during the two world wars.
Inaugurated in 1967, this memorial shows the extent of the violence that marked Europe and the entire Mediterranean area in the 20th century. The second largest memorial after the First World War memorial in Redipuglia, it contains the remains of around 75,000 fallen soldiers, 45,000 of whom are unknown, brought back from territories Italian units operated in during the First and Second World Wars. It houses, among others, the remains of thousands of Italian soldiers massacred by the Nazis in Albania, Yugoslavia, and Greece.
The monumental complex is located within a large park and features two floors, a crypt, several memorial rooms and a Historical Museum.
Recently restored, ceremonies have been held at the monument since its creation to mark various Italian public holidays, such as National Unification and Armed Forces Day which takes place on 4th November. The highest political and military authorities have visited the monument to mark Republic Day which falls on 2nd June.
