One of Italy’s most important industrial complexes, in September 1945 the company launched a programme to rebuild the plants destroyed by German troops.
The company Alti Forni, Fonderie e Acciaierie di Terni was founded in 1884. It was an industrial plant equipped with the most advanced technology of the day for the production of steel for military use. During the First World War, faced with the enormous demand for material, the company was able to triple its production in support of the war effort.
In the 1920s, the company changed its name to Terni Società per l’industria e l’elettricità S.P.A., and became an electrical-iron and steel-chemical complex. With Italy’s entry into the war on 10th June 1940, the company played a key role for the regime, producing large quantities of war material, despite difficulties in obtaining raw materials.
In 1944, massive and repeated Allied bombardments, together with the destruction of materials by the retreating Germans, caused considerable damage to the factory and production. However, after the First World War, the company started to rebuild with the help of its workers. Finally, from 1948, the company moved from military production to that of special steels for civil use.
