Where are we?

We are at the bunker atBorgo a Mozzano

The only structure of the Gothic Line to have remained intact and that can be visited today. In Borgo a Mozzano the Germans placed the Todt headquarters and exploited the population to build the Line.

Borgo a Mozzano is located in the Serchio Valley, a strategically important point in the Gothic Line. The Germans built various fortifications to intercept the Allied advance such as bunkers, tunnels, minefields, air-raid shelters, and anti-tank trenches, some of which are still visible today.

About 3,000 workers were employed by the Organisation Todt to construct these fortifications. Some were volunteers, most of whom wanted to avoid deportation to German factories. However, the majority were forced labourers recruited during roundups. A prison camp was set up in nearby village of Anchiano to house the construction workers.

Today, the fortifications of Borgo a Mozzano are the only structures of the Gothic Line that have remained intact. Thanks to excellent maintenance, they constitute a fascinating open-air museum, a unique historical panorama detailing the events of the Second World War along the Gothic Line.
