Where are we?
We are on La Maddalena Island
Between the 9th and the 13th of September 1943, 29 soldiers fell to liberate the island from Nazi occupation. The event is remembered by a Monument in memory of the fallen inaugurated on 13 September 2019.
The day following the news broadcast of the armistice between Italy and the Allies, on 9th September 1943, German soldiers occupied La Maddalena and arrested two admirals. Captain Carlo Avegno organised a revolt alongside members of the Navy, Army and Carabinieri, and on 13th September the battle against the Germans began. This was one of the earliest episodes of Resistance in Italy and cost the lives of 28 Italians and 12 Germans. Captain Carlo Avegno of the Regia Marina Militare was posthumously awarded the memorial Gold Medal of Military Valour.
In September 2019, the Memorial Monument for the Fallen of the Battle of La Maddalena was inaugurated near the former military arsenal, upon the initiative of the municipal administration and the local branch of the Italian National Association of Partisans (ANPI).
